October 1, 2025, 4:30PM EST, earlier today local time, central Philippines underwent a strong earthquake, the magnitude ranging from about 4 to almost 7 at the hardest hit areas, such as Cebu and Bogo City. The death toll is rising rapidly. Evidently emergency response in terms of treatment facilities cannot keep up with the level of destruction.
More details may be added as they become available.
There seems to be footage of entire highway bridges over a 16th of a mile or longer, rocking back and forth, (might need repair to preempt a future disaster).
Entire areas of roadways have given way with cars crashing 30 plus feet below into them, below buildings. The entire toll of those missing and those deceased might take time. There are reasonable concerns that there could be more collapses even if entire buildings.
Update 10/2/2025 evening EST: About 500 injured; 10s of thousands, perhaps over 80,000 persons reported displaced.
Missing are still being searched for. Technology that locates missing persons in rubble, might have apt use here.
Power (electrical etc.) gone for many.
People are having to sleep outdoors.
