Friday Roundup: Flood and Storm Waters Causing Extreme Danger Included in Headlines

Colorado

The flooding and storm waters that hit the Boulder, Colorado area, especially the town of Lyons, stealthily grew in severity to immense levels.  The infrastructure of the region, was just not prepared to handle a storm and flooding of the strength that occurred within the past few weeks.
Property is destroyed.  People are missing.  Rescue efforts are underway.  The catastrophe is grueling and harsh, to the extent that it makes it very tough for the amounts of cleanup, rescue, and rebuilding, to be at the point yet that an accurate assessment of the damage and toll of lives can be made.

Usually when people are missing, they have about 3 or 4 days to live depending on the person, if they do not have access to food and drink.

Key words for locations:
  • Drake in Larimer County
  • Lyons

Acapulco Mexico Hurt from Storm: Death Toll Continues to Rise. Mass Evacuation Effort of 10s of Thousands.

September 19, 2013
Acapulco in Mexico, popularly known as a resort town, is still crippled by the storm and flooding.
Reports a few days ago was that 40 were killed and about 40,000 stranded.
The situation in Acapulco keeps escalating.
As of the report directly below, the death toll is now 80.

Looting hits Acapulco as Mexico storm death toll reaches 80
By Alberto Fajardo and Luis Enrique Martinez, Reuters

Tens of thousands of people have been trapped in the aftermath of two storms that hammered vast swaths of Mexico. More than 1 million people have been affected. Acapulco's airport terminal was under water, stranding tourists.

Shops were plundered in the city's upscale neighborhood of Diamante, home to luxury hotels and plush apartments, where dozens of cars were ruined by muddy brown floodwaters. Marines were posted outside stores to prevent further theft...

...Northwest of Acapulco in the village of La Pintada, rescue workers have recovered the bodies of 18 people killed after a landslide buried their homes, the town's mayor said.

That death toll could rise because more than 60 people in the area have disappeared.

Torrential rains were spawned by two storms, Ingrid and Manuel, which converged on Mexico from the Gulf and the Pacific over the weekend, triggering the flash floods. On Wednesday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center announced Manuel strengthened to a hurricane.

Rescue workers in the state of Baja California Sur, home to the popular beach resorts of Los Cabos, prepared to evacuate people from flood-prone areas.

Manuel will likely soak the states of Nayarit, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur in the next few days, the NHC said....

About 100 members of Occupy Wall Street returned Tuesday to the small plaza near the New York Stock Exchange that once teemed with thousands of people protesting financial inequality, marking the second anniversary of their movement's beginnings.

Small groups of protesters marched around the streets near Zuccotti Park in the morning, while another march to Washington Square Park clogged sidewalks in the early afternoon. The protesters were scattered in smaller groups around New York City.

Gunman kills 4 in Austria, police raid his hideout

 By GEORGE JAHN

The Associated Press

KOLLAPRIEL, Austria —

A gunman in Austria killed four people, including three police officers, and fired sporadically at police on Tuesday after barricading himself in a farm building, police officials said.

After a 12-hour standoff, police stormed the building and were searching for the suspect, Interior Ministry spokesman Karl-Heinz Grundboeck told The Associated Press. It wasn't immediately clear whether he was still in the building and the search was widening to other nearby buildings on the farm grounds.

The killings began shortly after midnight Monday when police stopped the man on a road near a wilderness area west of Vienna, where frequent poaching incidents occur.

The gunman fled in his car, which landed in a ditch in the nearby town of Annaberg, then shot and wounded a member of Austria's Cobra SWAT team at a police checkpoint, said Grundboeck.

An ambulance raced to the scene, but the gunman shot and killed its driver as he tried to give first aid to the wounded policeman, who later died. The gunman also shot and wounded another officer at the scene.

Later Tuesday, another officer who had been missing was found shot dead in his patrol car, said Grundboeck. Regional police spokesman Roland Scherscher said that officer was apparently killed after the suspect carjacked the police vehicle and took him hostage.

The attacker then fatally shot a second police officer at a roadblock before barricading himself in the farm building on the outskirts of Melk, a central town 70 kilometers (40 miles) west of Vienna, Grundboeck said. The gunman sporadically fired at police units near the building.

Already, thoughts of the Fort Hood shooting that occurred in Texas are evoked, is there a tie, and, or common denominators, in terms of the mindset of those that might have, or had, the tendency to engage in a rampage mannered shooting, from, or in Texas?

The importance of safeguarding ID cards, and using them properly, comes up.
Are there further steps to make facilities more secure?
