Ferry Boat Catastrophe - Aug/2/2026
Posted by HCN on Sunday, August 2, 2026
August 2, 2026, within recent hours, a ferry, boat, Mutiara Santosa 2 caught fire in the waters off Madura Island, Indonesia, near Java. What the exact status is in terms of numbers of survivors, unclear at this second 1pm EST. Rescues obviously underway, but might be coming up short of 100% ideal, accountability. The ferry was carrying a reported 271 passengers. Active situation.
Evidently, it seems from reports so far, the fire broke out sometime after 6am this morning. Incident went on in the region in or around somewhere between Madura and Buruan Sapudi island. The ferry was traveling from Surabaya to Makassar.
Sometime around 10am, other boats finally arrived on the scene to help.
Developments in search and rescue: TB Hasnur 26 and British Mentor went assist. Clusters of individuals with orange life vests awaited rescue. Some people jumped overboard. That might, is, or probably is mainly who is being looked for now. Another rescue ship is on the way or was, but travel time was more than several hours.
HCN opinion/suggestion: This is or was an incident that should have had aerial response involved, or could still benefit from, such as helicopters, drones, as well as undersea drones for finding individuals. Technology is here to be made use of, it doesn't matter much where the emergency is to apply it.
